You don’t get to 20 years with T1D all at once.
April 2025 - Diabetes Around the World.
Hey everyone,
Last month I told you about how my goal for 2025 was to do more with less, and wow, I didn’t realize the power those words would have over the first part of my year. I recently returned from a trip across the globe to the International Diabetes Federation Annual Congress in Bangkok, Thailand, where I hosted a panel and spoke to the Young Leaders in Diabetes cohort.
This year has come with a lot of reflection on my 20 years living with diabetes and the past 10 years of my advocacy journey through podcasts and social media content. It’s taught me that you truly never know where your journey will take you, and that’s why I continue to encourage others to share their story with diabetes because sharing mine has changed my life in more ways than I can count, and all for the better.
I recorded the first podcast of the year this week, because our brothers and sisters with T1D in Myanmar need our help. This, and many other global issues in the diabetes community would have gone completely unnoticed by me if not for starting this advocacy journey 10 years ago.
So although the year of doing more with less has at times looked like “continuing to do all the things” I am doing fewer things, working at a natural pace and above all, obsessing over quality. Since making this change I’ve had space to think, plan and spend time on things which really needed my attention, so I’m thankful to you for allowing me to explore and think about what’s next for Diabetics Doing Things.
The good news is you won’t have to wait much longer. The first step is April 30, where I will be hosting a panel with fellow T1Ds Dessi and Chris, talking about the research and lived experience of Diabetes and Exercise. Join us LIVE on YouTube, RSVP here.
Following that, I’m working on a series about Diabetic Ketoacedosis (DKA) along with making big asks for interviews with Diabetes Legends that I haven’t had the courage to ask for.
The thing I know for sure, is the words you speak to yourself and about yourself have more power than you think. Since I’ve given myself permission to do more with less, I’ve been able to do more with less. Since I’ve been present about speaking to myself like a friend, I’ve been a better friend to myself. And since I’ve stopped making the mistake of dreaming too small, bigger opportunities are coming my way. I’m looking forward to sharing them all with you.
Hope to see you soon,
Rob
