Let’s Talk About DKA

Like many people with Diabetes, when I was diagnosed with T1D in 2005 I was hospitalized with Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA). At the time, I just knew I was really sick. I was dehydrated, nauseous and frequently urinating. But after my diagnosis, DKA was rarely discussed with my care team and only seemed to surface within the diabetes community when someone was sharing about a recent hospitalization. It seemed taboo and I sensed there were feelings of shame about discussing it openly. Yes, DKA is very serious, but we can do hard things if we set our mind to it.

So when Abbott approached me earlier this year about a series digging deep into DKA, I started with the uncomfortable truth:

The American Diabetes Association estimates DKA is responsible for between 13-19% of T1D related deaths in patients under the age of 58.

How could I approach such a serious topic in an informative, educational and approachable manner, without using scare tactics or being too clinical?

In therapy, I’ve learned if we can label feelings and emotions with words, we can take away the power they hold over us. The episodes in this series are my effort to “tame” my own feelings and emotions about DKA by openly discussing it with experts and patients with lived experience in an effort to help you speak openly about DKA. The following 5 episodes are the result of this effort:

  • Episode 334 - What is DKA? Breaking down the basics with Dr. Eden Miller (LISTEN HERE)

  • Episode 335 - Euglycemic DKA and other hidden dangers with Dr. Eden Miller (LISTEN HERE)

  • Episode 336 - Strategies to Help Prevent and Treat DKA with Dr. Eden Miller (LISTEN HERE)

  • Episode 337 - DKA in Real Life: A Caregiver’s Perspective with Leigh Fickling (DROPS MONDAY)

  • Episode 338 - DKA in Real Life: It Can Happen to You with Danica Collins (aka Danica the Diabetic - DROPS MONDAY)

These episodes will live on our feed on Spotify and Apple Music and the full videos are available on our YouTube Channel in a DKA Playlist. This series was extremely beneficial for me, I learned so much from my conversations with Dr. Miller and I hope you will take something away that will help you or your loved ones. It’s critically important that we know and are aware of the signs of DKA and have the tools to get the help we need.

I hope you enjoy this series! Our team has been hard at work behind the scenes working on it over the past 8 months and we’re very excited to bring it to you. Keep on the lookout for the social clips on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok and save these videos so you can refer to them the next time DKA comes up in your life.
