Diabetics Doing Things: The Drip
February 2021
I don’t know about you, but I felt like January 2021 was the longest/shortest month of all time.
For a number of years, these channels have been all about me - sharing stories of me and other people with Diabetes, sharing perspective on traveling all over to events or on vacation, sharing what I think of technology or what’s going on in the world.
And with More Than A Diabetic, I realized that while it’s very cool that these platforms mostly feature me in some capacity - at times I need to take a big step back and be an audience member.
And I’m grateful that More Than A Diabetic gave me a chance to do that.
While editing the nearly 8 hours of discussion, I got to hear up close and personal what our Black and Brown brothers and sisters with Diabetes go through on a daily basis.
What stood out the most to me is how different their experiences with Diabetes were than my own. Same disease, completely different experiences. On the other hand, it was also noticeable how similar all their experiences were to each other regardless of age, class or diagnosis.
There will be many stories shared in February for Black History Month, my request of those reading this is to take time to really listen to them. Put yourself in the shoes of someone who is different than you, even if you share the same chronic illness.
There are times to speak and times to listen, and I’ve done a lot of talking, so it’s time to play catch up on the listening.
Want to know how you can start? Listen to all 4 episodes of More Than a Diabetic, and take some notes!
I hope everyone had a safe January, and that none of you let other people’s extra Type-A manifestation of the “New Year New Goals New Me” derail you from your path.
Chat with you soon! Enjoy the rest of the drip
