Diabetics Doing Things:

The DripJanuary 2022

January 2022 marks 17 years of living with Diabetes for me.

Recently, I’ve been experiencing Diabetes content/community/commentary burnout in the way that is likely due to being a chronically-ill person living through a years long pandemic.

However, I saw a comment (that friend of the pod @nerdscanfight posted) online that said something to the effect of “some people with chronic illnesses are lazy” and I felt like I could address it.

Because chronic illnesses affect such a large swath of the population, and humans are wildly variant across large populations it is reasonable that there are some people who are simply existing in their own feeble, fragile way and aren’t as concerned with striving or performance or doing amazing things.

And you know what? Those people deserve respect and dignity.

Those of us living with chronic illnesses or caring for someone with a chronic illness know that we’re living on borrowed time.

In 2021, when discussing the 100 year anniversary of the discovery of insulin, it occurred to me that if I had been born at nearly ANY other time in history, except for the last 100 years, I would be dead.

The fact that we are alive and able to read this email is worth CELEBRATING!

So my burnout led to this discovery:

I intend to celebrate every minute of my borrowed time. I will recognize daily the fragility and sacredness of existence. It is my pleasure to be alive today and to celebrate my borrowed time, so I’m going to continue to live in a way that acknowledges how rare it is that I get to draw breath on this plane another day.

Happy New Year and I hope you are ready for a BIG year from Diabetics Doing Things.

November means National Diabetes Awareness Month! At Diabetics Doing Things we kicked off a series of graphics to help educate the 9 in 10 people who live without diabetes. These posts became some of our most shared content of all time!

2021 was a year full of amazing pod's and guests. We started the year with 4 episodes of More Than A Diabetic, Round Table Discussions of the challenges of Diabetes and how it impacts BIPOC communities. We went on to host incredible guests through out the year from an International Super Model, NFL athlete, to Living with Diabetes while doing sex work. It was a year of episodes we are grateful for, check out a few below.
