DDT to partner with North Texas Food BankIn January we asked ourselves a big question at Diabetics Doing Things,“How can we make a real impact on people in Dallas with Diabetes?” For 7 years we’ve hustled and hacked our way to:
250 podcasts & 1.7M downloads
30 public speaking events
92 YouTube videos
Thousands of social media posts and emails
Board seats and Councils
Partnerships and Spokesperson deals
Sure, it has had an impact. But the thought that our work isn’t helping those who need it most was a recurring theme year after year. No matter who I asked, no one had the answer on how to reach the millions of disengaged, disenfranchised and disadvantaged people with Diabetes in the United States. I thought about stopping. Ultimately, I decided to go back to the original idea for Diabetics Doing Things:“Help One Person.” During the early days of the pandemic, I became fixated with macro statistics:
1 million Americans dead
400,000 dead with Diabetes
2.8 million uninsured
1 in 4 people with Diabetes rationing insulin
1 in 3 people in the US live with some kind of Diabetes
The last one stayed with me. Every large number of people I’ve heard since then, I think of the 1 in 3 with Diabetes. So when I heard that North Texas Food Bank serves 134 million meals every year to kids, families and seniors in North Texas, I knew they were serving a ton of people with Diabetes. People who could use some help. So we did what we do best. Developed a simple, practical solution for people with Diabetes using a little bit of technology, design and partners. Beyond Type 1 were supportive of the idea, and gave us $5,000 to cover printing costs. Millet the Printer gave us a great deal and we were able to get 90,000 postcards printed with QR codes that will connect the seniors and families served by NTFB to critical Diabetes resources (clinics, hospitals, mutual aid, resources & education). Our first answer to our big question will appear in NTFB kits starting in September, and we’re committed to building on this momentum to help as many people as we can. That is after all, why we started this in the first place. Rob, Eritrea and Ashley #diabeticsdoingthings
