My Most-Recommended Diabetes Advice
The advice I give people the most is make a friend with diabetes. The interview for this week with Dr. Sally Kornbluth and Ron Daniels, both presidents of top universities, made me realize that no matter who you are, when you were diagnosed or what is going on in your life, the quickest way to improve the state of your life with diabetes is to make a friend with diabetes.
Both Ron and Sally were diagnosed as adults. Unlike many adults diagnosed with LADA, they were correctly diagnosed from the start, but like many of us, they didn’t have anyone in their life immediately to turn to for advice or counsel.
At first you may not think you have much in common with a University President, but I think this interview will teach you that when it comes to living with diabetes, many of our day-to-day experiences are extremely similar. Whether keeping candies on the table of important meetings, or our glucose going up during stressful moments, diabetes is with us wherever we go.
What’s encouraging is that these two leaders face the same challenges that you and I face with diabetes on a daily basis. Diabetes doesn’t discriminate between University Presidents or Elementary School students. We all have to balance the challenging physical, mental, financial and social elements of life with diabetes.
My personal feelings after the conversation with Sally and Ron were true gratitude, and a little bit of laughter. After all, without sharing my life with diabetes, I would never have been able to have a conversation with just one President of MIT or Johns Hopkins, my transcripts and resume simply just aren’t good enough. But because we continue to tell the amazing stories of people with diabetes from all around the globe, I got to spend an hour with two of the best minds in higher learning, and the three of us just chatted about life with diabetes for an hour.
I hope you get as much out of this interview as I did, and above all I’m thankful for the many friends with diabetes I’ve made along this journey.
Keep living well,
Rob
