What everyone with diabetes wants - continuing the search for insulin sensitivity

After 21 years, I feel confident the thing we all want is what most of us remember from before we were diagnosed. We ate (whatever was in front of us) didn’t give a second thought about carbs or glucose and carried on with our lives. We exercised (or cleaned, shopped, ran around with our friends, walked) and didn’t have to think about every scenario imaginable. If we were lucky, maybe we got to eat ice cream in our bed watching a movie. Without worrying about insulin on board, how hydrated we were, or what our sugars were going to do once we turned out the light and went to sleep.

Unfortunately, I can’t deliver that euphoric feeling to you (though there are some really encouraging results from ongoing trials).

So what’s the best consolation prize I can deliver? Insulin sensitivity. The trust that when you dose for the carbs, proteins and fats you eat that your body will accept the exogenous insulin you (or your pump) deliver to you. That you could enjoy a high carb meal or too much popcorn or for the love of all that is good, a bready slice of homemade pizza or two.

I’m bored with restriction and shame, I’m bored with keto and low-carb and I’m tired of trade-offs that when you really dig into them, aren’t very helpful or haven’t really been studied for long-term health.

I thought about when I feel my best, and I came up with “when my insulin works.”

So I am going on a search. I’m finding the leaders in the various fields that make up our insulin sensitivity and I’m bringing them on the podcast to drop knowledge for you. Oh and guess what, no biohacking here, we’re covering biohacker topics with evidence-based research.

My first guest is Dr. Carol Johnston, the worlds leading resource on Vinegar and Glucose. She published her first study on Vinegar in 2004, and has over 125 studies to her name. She dropped incredible knowledge on this week’s episode, and I’ve listed some of my favorites below.

Needless to say, since I started preparing for her interview, I’ve been adding a splash of vinegar to my water with my meal. There’s something to it — SCIENCE!

I hope you enjoy the journey, I’m pretty fired up about it.

Keep living well,

Rob

5 Things I bet you never knew about vinegar

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar is popular in the US because we have a surplus of apples

  2. It doesn’t matter what Vinegar you use, they all contain Acetic Acid.

  3. Vinegar appears to block glucose uptake in the stomach and small intestine.

  4. Vinegar increases glucose absorption in the muscle by up to 30%

  5. Acetic acid is what your body turns fiber into in the small intestine - we make our own vinegar!

Hear Rob Speak

Rob is speaking in Dallas at the Type One Together “Team Together” event on April 18.

Team Together is a full-day gathering created just for parents of children with type 1 diabetes. A place to feel understood, connect with other parents who get it, learn alongside one another, grab a drink, share a meal, and take a meaningful break from the nonstop responsibilities of diabetes care. This is not your average T1D event—it’s something special.

Rob is also the closing keynote at this year’s Diabetes & Mental Health conference on May 5. It’s a virtual conference, so you can hear him speak from anywhere: Register here.
